History of the Greene County Citizens Club

The Greene County Citizens Club, Local No. 7, Nemacolin, Pennsylvania, was organized in 1934 for the purpose of educating their members, who at that time were not Citizens, to be better citizens, and to create a meeting place for the membership where they could meet and discuss their everyday problems amongst themselves.

The organization was chartered, or incorporated, on August 27, 1935, and the officers at the time of incorporation were Milton Potrebich, president; Edward Morofsky, secretary, and Joseph Guerra, treasurer. The first Club Rooms were on the second floor of the Antonini Building. In later years they purchased the building owned at that time by Charles Halloway, and they were constantly remodeling same. Therefore in January of 1947, the membership decided to build an addition to the present building, which could be used for dancing by the membership.

The officers and directors went to Altman and Altman, registered architects, in Uniontown, Pa., who drew up the plans for the building. Contracts were sent out for bids and the General Construction Company, from Morgantown, W. Va., was the lowest bidder. The electrical work on the building was done by Willis and Davidson, Carmichaels, Pa., and the heating and plumbing was done by Nemacolin Plumbing and Heating Co., Nemacolin, Pa. The asphalt flooring in the building was done by Art Flooring Co., Nemacolin, Pa.

The Aims and Purposes of the Club will continue to be to educate our members to be better citizens and to have them come to this, their new building, and enjoy themselves while they are here; and make the aim a reality, that this Club is a place where they can meet, and when they need a rest or a little recreation they can find it here.

The officers of the Club wish to compliment the membership for their cooperation with us, and the patience they had in the continuous delay of constructing this building, which was caused by shortage of materials. We also want to compliment the architects, Altman & Altman; General Construction Company, Willis & Davidson, John Mesich of the Nemacolin Plumbing & Heating Co.; John Pumper of the Art Flooring Co.; the officers and directors of the First National Bank and Trust Co., Waynesburg; our legal adviser, John I. Hook, Jr., for the fine cooperation they have given us. We want them to know that we thank them very much.

The officers and directors are to be complimented also for their fine work and effort they have given to the Club to see that the building is completed.

The officers are: Edward Morofsky, president; John Jazwa, vice president; Frank Block, financial secretary; Andrew T. Urda, recording secretary; Frank Cilensky, treasurer. Directors: Ira Cole, John Kozak, Thaddeeus Lukowsky. Joseph Gotch is steward.
